Chapter 13 - Emrys

Emrys woke in the morning as the sunlight began to spill into the tent. He yawned, then looked over at Jessica. She was fast asleep, her form rising and falling steadily. Sunlight trickled across her face, highlighting the light splattering of freckles. He found himself, not for the first time, admiring her beauty. It was even more apparent when she was sleeping, her face softened in a wholly peaceful look. He realized he hadn’t seen such a look before from her. The few days that he’d known her had been filled with stress and terror for the girl, and gazing at her lips resting in a soft smile felt foreign. He decided he didn’t want to wake her yet. Didn’t want to ruin the moment. He got up as quietly as possible, and began to repack what he could. He knew he’d have to rouse her sooner than later; they needed to get an early start to continue making alright time. He packed more slowly than usual, though, trying to give her whatever few seconds he could. Finally, there was only the tent and her bedroll left to put away.

Emrys put a gentle hand on her shoulder, giving her a slight shake. He looked down at her wrists. The red marks from the night before had turned an ugly purple, already bruising. Guilt clenched his mind as he realized he’d caused that when he’d roughly pulled her over to the fire. He wasn’t fully sure what had come over him. Some combination of exhaustion from the day's events and frustration out her outburst, he guessed, though he didn’t think it excused his treatment of her. He’d barely been paying attention to how much more delicate humans were, and she was paying the price for that now.

He shook his head. What was he thinking? He didn’t need to feel bad for her. Not for her situation, not for how he’d treated her. This was just how things were done. If anything, he told himself, she was lucky he’d been the one to take her. She wouldn’t be brought back to the palace more gore than person like his cousin’s Prize, or believing she was destined to be a fairy queen like Halcian’s. He’d avoided harming her when he could, he’d been honest with her. She just didn’t realize how fortunate she was. Even as he told himself that, guilt continued to nag at his mind. He wondered what her life had been like back in her own world. It dawned on him that the only thing he really knew about her, besides her name, was that she had a roommate. He found himself itching to know more about her. Who was she? What did she like?

Emrys tried to push that line of thinking from his mind. That would no doubt complicate things, if he started thinking too much about her feelings.

Jessica’s eyes flickered open. She flinched upon seeing him. He pretended not to notice.

“We need to get going soon,” he said.
